Or be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">So, who are you?<br\/><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I mean, really. Who are you?<br\/>I know who I am.<br\/>I&#8217;m me. Wrinkles, extra pounds, scars and all.<br\/>Take it or leave it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People always say &#8220;Oh, just be yourself.&#8221;<br\/>What they really mean is &#8220;Oh, just be who <em>I<\/em> want you to be.&#8221;<br\/>Because that&#8217;s what it boils down to. Everyone around you wants you to be what\u00a0<em>they<\/em> want you to be. How dare you deviate from that?<br\/>The phrase &#8220;At your age&#8230;&#8221; makes me want to high five the person saying it.<br\/>In the face.<br\/>With a chair.<\/p>\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Gloria Hallelujah'; font-size: 24px;\">Jealous much?<br><span style=\"font-family: Cuprum;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">(Because that&#8217;s often what it boils down to.)<\/span><br><span style=\"font-family: Dosis; font-size: 18px;\">How many times have people dissuaded you from doing, wearing, wanting something? &#8220;For your own good.&#8221;? Or because it wasn&#8217;t &#8220;seemly&#8221;?<br><span style=\"font-family: 'Patrick Hand'; font-size: 16px;\">Ever wondered why they thought it was a &#8220;bad idea&#8221;?<\/span><br><span style=\"font-family: 'Patrick Hand'; font-size: 16px;\">Ever done it anyway? And had fun doing it? Positive outcome, and all that?&nbsp;<\/span><br><span style=\"font-family: 'Patrick Hand'; font-size: 16px;\">Usually the nay-sayers are green with envy. The dissuasion wasn&#8217;t because they really thought you &#8220;couldn&#8217;t&#8221;, but because they didn&#8217;t want you to do something they&#8217;d love to do &#8212; but didn&#8217;t dare &#8212; usually because someone told&nbsp;<em>them<\/em> they &#8220;shouldn&#8217;t&#8221;.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<p>There is always a lot of (often well-meaning) advice being given.<br\/>&#8220;You\u00a0<em>ought to<\/em> dress like that. It would suit you.&#8221;<br\/>&#8220;You\u00a0<em>might want to<\/em> do XYZ, it would be good for you.&#8221;<br\/>&#8220;You\u00a0<em>shouldn&#8217;t<\/em> do ABC, at\u00a0<em>your age<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I have two words for such advice:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fuck. Off.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>No, really. I mean it. Fuck-the-hell-right-off.<br\/>Yeah, I know. I\u00a0<em>ought not<\/em> swear like a sailor\u00a0<em>at my age<\/em>.<br\/>Well, screw you, because you\u00a0<em>ought not<\/em> lecture people\u00a0<em>my age<\/em>.<br\/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maybe you&#8217;re similar to me.<br\/>Maybe you don&#8217;t like being told you\u00a0<em>can&#8217;t<\/em>.<br\/>Maybe you don&#8217;t like being told you\u00a0<em>shouldn&#8217;t.<\/em><br\/>Maybe you don&#8217;t like being told you\u00a0<em>oughtn&#8217;t.<\/em><em><\/em><br\/>Maybe you don&#8217;t like being told you would be <em>crazy<\/em> to try, at <em>your<\/em>\u00a0age.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Can&#8217;t, shouldn&#8217;t, don&#8217;t, mustn&#8217;t&#8230; aren&#8217;t in my dictionary anymore.<br\/>I can, and I bloody well will, if I want to. <br\/>There.<br\/>Deal with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I don&#8217;t care anymore what people want me to be. If they want someone to be a specific way&#8230; then don&#8217;t look in my direction. <br\/>I&#8217;ll never be what you want me to be. <br\/>I&#8217;ll never say what you want me to say. <br\/>I&#8217;ll never do what you want me to do. <br\/>I&#8217;ll never dress the way you want me to.<br\/>I don&#8217;t want to be what you want me to be.<br\/>I&#8217;m me, and I want to be me. <br\/>And if that&#8217;s not good enough, then that&#8217;s your problem. <br\/>Not mine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So if someone tells you, you shouldn&#8217;t, can&#8217;t, ought not, mustn&#8217;t&#8230; and you want to?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don&#8217;t be them, don&#8217;t be who they want you to be.<br\/>Do it anyway.<\/p>\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Satisfy; font-size: 32px;\"><strong>Be you<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Marck Script';\">(Unless you can be a dragon.
